Rose Window Restoration Project

Preserving Our Light. The Rose Window Restoration Project

Sine the turn of the century the historic rose window at the Bottskill Baptist Church has stood as a beacon of beauty in both the church and our Greenwich community.  This window does more than just light up the sanctuary—it connects us to the craftsmen of the past and the spirit of our shared history.

Why we need your help

The average life of a rose stained glass window is about 100 years.  Our Bottskill window just reached its 120th year.   Unfortunately, time and the upstate New York elements have taken their toll.  The lead mortar between the glass pieces of the window are weakening, breaking and falling out in several locations, putting the glass at risk of permanent damage.  The brick and surrounding structure of the stained glass window is also deteriorating and crumbling.  Also, the clear protective covering over the window is very cloudy and needs to be replaced.

To ensure this piece of art continues to shine for future generations, we must begin a professional restoration.

How you can make a difference

Every gift, no matter the size, helps us preserve this piece of the Bottskill Baptist Church and the Greenwich Community history.  Donations can be made online by clicking the button below.  Checks can be made out to the Bottskill Baptist Church with ‘rose window’ in the memo, and mailed to: Bottskill Baptist Church, PO Box 45, Greenwich NY 12834.

Our goal

Our goal is complete restoration of the rose window using two professional contractors, Chapman Stained Glass Studio and Rushinski Masonry.   This restoration will include :

  1. Careful removal and cleaning of historic glass.
  2. Complete re-leading of the structural frame.
  3. Installation of protective exterior glazing to prevent future weathering.
  4. Interior and exterior restoration and repair of the brick surrounding the glass window.

The total cost for these steps and restoration completion is $50,000.

We  have developed a fund raising plan which includes:

  • A grant from the Sacred Sites Conservancy
  • Many fund raising events
  • A project donation campaign
  • Funds from our savings if necessary

Restoration work details

All of the stained glass contractors interviewed by the church Trustees have recommended that the best way to repair our window is to remove the entire window and repair it at their professional facility.

Chapman Stained Glass Studio of Ballston Spa, NY has been selected to complete the project. This company was established in 1898 and was the company who installed our original Rose Window!

Rushinski Masonry of Shushan has also been selected to complete the necessary brick and mortar repair work needed around the window before the repaired window can be reinstalled.

The Trustees are hopeful that the rose window restoration project will begin this summer .
